III. Literature as a Platform in Education for Sustainable Development
Literature is a written works especially those novels, poems, plays,
etc valued for artistic work. Literature is all about the culture, practices of
one’s country.
Literature shows that in its truest form and in its higher reaches
inevitably becomes the description, interpretation, and expression of the life
of society, touched into beauty by the intuitive genius and by the creative
imagination of the maker of literature “of Philippine Literature it says that
it must record and interpret the Filipino hope and experience, and speak in a
voice ribbed with criticism, protest and challenge. If it is develop and
endure” I believe that the future of Filipino Literature in English is bright
and that such literature has every chance to survive, that the English language
is no barrier to the expression of the Filipino soul and aspiration.
Literature as a student is necessary in the sense that we as
Filipino Citizen must be aware of written works that the writers tried to
impart to us. We must necessity assume revolution to be a part of the
historical process. A literature that has much more refreshment value much more
than of an aesthetic quality, and is definitely function in characters. And,
lastly by the very nature of its material and function, it is realistic.
IV. Reflection in Literature
Philippine literature was the descriptive title of our subject. When
I heard this, my first impression is that it is knowledgeable. But as what I’ve
heard from the higher years, it is boring and every time it is being discussed,
it makes you sleep… So, when I check my schedule, “Oh my Gosh!” it was
scheduled 1:00 to 2:00 pm in the afternoon which most of us considered being a
“katuruyo time” and sitting in your chair for about 3 hours is so exhausted,
isn’t it?
On the first day of class our teacher oriented us. Then the next
meeting, we started our formal class and she started it with the first lesson,
“what is Literature?” and as what our teacher said, literature is a written
works that could be a fiction or non-fiction and the example of this is the
legend, poems, novels, plays and etc.
We first discussed the legend. Our teacher assigned us to search for
a legend and present it in front of our classmates. As we discussed the legend,
we learned where certain thing comes from and that it tells a story of origin.
Some of the legend we discussed is the Legend of Pineapple, Legend of Malakas
and Maganda and other great Filipino legend. We are also trained to speak
English in front and expand our knowledge about the things in our environment.
As what our teacher said, legend could be true or supernatural but as we go
further I became inattentive to listen because it takes a long time before it
finished.
After the
legend, we proceed to the next lesson which is the riddles and proverbs. As usual,
our teacher assigned us to search for a riddles and proverbs. We had much fun
with this lesson because everybody participated. We played a riddle guessing
game. The rule is that somebody is going
to dictate the riddles he searched and he is also the one to choose someone to
answer it. Guessing the answer of the riddles is really fun and exciting.
After we
finished the recent topic, we go along with the next topic which is the ballad.
Our teacher assigned us again to search for a Kenny Roger’s songs and relate it
to our real life. In this topic, we observed the mixed emotions felt by the one
who is presenting its assignment in front. There are some that are sad because of
the tragedies in their lives and there are some who are happy because of the love
that they felt with their families, special someone and our one and only savior
Jesus Christ. In this topic, we also learned that ballad songs are expressions
of one’s emotion. So, if you want to express your emotions, you can express it
through songs.
The last topic that we discussed is the epic.
We learned the different epics of the different tribes in the Philippines like
in Ilocano, the Biag ni Lam-ang, and the Ibalon or Hadiong in Bicol. I learned
that most of the epic shows heroism of some traditional hero.
It is so true
that in literature subject, you can acquire more knowledge. And it doesn’t mean
it is boring at all, it depends on how interested a person to deal with this
subject.
V. Integration of Education for Sustainable Development to Literature
The Integration of education for sustainable development to
literature through rendering some services to the cause of letters in this
country by helping stimulate interest in local writing in English this will be
done through inspiring and guiding many students in the pursuit of the
humanities which believes to be true foundation of a complete man. Today’s
generation must give emphasis in education especially in science and technology
at the expense of a liberal arts education, when college students are often
merely instructed rather than educated.
The main concern in Philippine Literature is the English part of it.
We must treat Philippine literature as it is: with humility, but also with
respect. We must not call it great, for it is not; we must not treat it
patronizingly, for it deserves respectful treatment. We also need to have a
literary critic that is naturally careful to offend no one, which tantamount to
saying that criticisms lack courage and intellectual honesty. The truth that is
it prefers to encourage more than discourage, to build rather than destroy,
rather than mislead.
A true Filipino intellectual with more practical sense than just
rabid nationalism and we believe that the English language, judging from the
way better-educated Filipino have handled it. Is here to stay despite the way
it is being slaughtered by those who lack competence on it. Though colonial in
origin like Spanish, English is a language that has become such a part of the
national culture that it seems permissible to suppose that its use need not
signify subservience or a colonial mentality and that perhaps a worthy
literature in that language might evolve in the Philippine soil if it is not
already done so. No one can deny the fact that English has become the language
in the Philippine and there is nothing incongruous is the fact that when
Filipino writes, they write for the most part in English. Filipino is an
evitable heritage that any right-thinking Filipino should not be ashamed of.
In analyzing the growth of Philippine letters, it says that the most
serious drawback to its development is not economic nor merely linguistic but
cultural. The tree cannot grow unless it is in contact with the elements.
Likewise, art is a lifelong pursuit. There is no shortcut to greatness, not
even in literature language cannot be legislated and imposed upon a people. The
solution is to see our culture not as well to be emptied or refilled but as a
seed to be nurtured, to be allowed to grow, to flower, to bear fruit and for
the fruit to ripen on the tree.
Philippine literature must not be isolated or cut off written and
from without if it is to flourished. It must deep roots; it must draw vitality
from the soil erosion elegance from civilized art and university from
Christendom.
